Theme Courses

In addition to our long-term education, Arkki offers exciting theme courses. The duration of each of our theme courses can be up to 40 hours. They are designed around a certain theme or topic such as hut building, urban planning, product design, fashion design, etc.

Children come and work in teams for 2 to 5 continuous days, working hard on a project that they really care and having a lot of fun along the way. Design thinking, STEAM skills and knowledge, 21st-century skills and qualities are extensively integrated.
At the end of the course, the children know that they have succeeded in creating things that not many grown-ups would be able to complete, e.g. ideas for a new smart and child-friendly city, a hut village on trees, or a fashion show. This kind of achievement will boost a child’s confidence and self-esteem to continue their personal development.

ArkkiBotics – Robot City theme course is about learning the 21-century skills and CT (Computational Thinking) through playful activities and hands-on experimentation.

During the theme course the pupils practice important skills such as:

  • curiosity
  • creativity
  • communication
  • complex problem solving
  • critical thinking

What does a happy, smart, and child-friendly city look like?

How can we design a better city for the next generation?
In the Urban Design theme course, participants ideate and create their future Dream City in 3D models. Multidisciplinary urban planning projects engage pupils in fun and creative learning activities through which the pupils get acquainted with sustainability, architectural design, green building, infrastructure, housing, recreation, and how these and other aspects constitute a liveable, smart, welcoming, and sustainable city for all.
The design projects provide opportunities to practice innovation skills like critical thinking and complex problem-solving, and the design thinking process. Through active and peer learning practices, the participants practice expressing and arguing their own opinions as well as negotiation, empathy skills, and teamwork.

In Urban Design 3D AR theme course, pupils take a look at cities from different perspectives and design the future city of their dreams. In addition to the traditional planning methods such as discussions, planning and sketching the pupils will also learn how to use a 3D modelling software to illustrate their ideas through computer models and visualisations. The pupils learn about history of city planning, discuss environmental issues, form different solutions and sketch various ideas.

The process involves engaging pupils in experiential learning, persisting problem-solving, embracing collaboration and working through the creative process of urban design. The pupils practise collaboration, questioning and evaluating ideas and solutions, empathising and participation as well as listening and analysing other people’s opinions and presenting and justifying their own.

The use of 3D computer drawing and visualisation develops the pupils 3D Thinking and Spatial Intelligence. This course also builds bridges between science, technology, engineering and mathematics, collectively known as the STEM disciplines – and even beyond, including the social and human aspects of urban design.

In the Product Design theme course, we approach the world of products from various perspectives and get familiar with design thinking process in practice. During the course, we design and prototype a variety of products in different scales as well as practice graphic design and package design.

During the course we explore questions such as:
  • Why do we need design?
  • What should be considered when designing a product?
  • What defines the life cycle of products?
  • How can products be designed sustainable?

During the course, pupils get acquainted with different materials and learn to use a wide range of techniques and tools. In this course, pupils will also get acquainted with design in our living environment through hands-on design projects and three dimensional experimentation. The underlying theme of the course is circular economy and innovative reuse of materials.

Do you dream about being a fashion designer?
In the Arkki’s Fashion Design theme course, pupils will be merged in a fashion design process and go through all the stages from designing to making patterns, cutting the textile, sawing and completing the garment.
The course will culminate in a fashion show showcasing the designs and giving a possibility for each designer to walk the catwalk and be in the center of the spotlights. What an immersive experience to dive into the world of design!
During the design and creation process, the pupils practice creative thinking, and designing.

This course is a dream come true!

During the Hut Building theme course, pupils will each day build a different hut together as a group. The pupils are introduced to nomadic huts and natural materials as well as their uses.

Through a hands-on building process, the pupils will learn about ancient building traditions of different peoples, different structural systems, joining methods and knots.

Pupils are guided to the use of various real tools and learn how to use them in a safe way. The pupils will work with natural building materials according to different traditions. Learning by building in 1:1 scale is a powerful and exciting experience to children of all ages.

Learning is so fun, one doesn’t even notice it! Arkki’s Hut Building theme course is phenomenal learning at its best and teaches cultural understanding, handicraft skills, as well as collaboration, team work and creativity.

Environment Art Theme Course

The Environmental Art theme course engages pupils in an interdisciplinary creative adventure embracing ideas from philosophy, art, design, cultural history, and ecology.
During the course the pupils create a Mystical Garden, an installation artwork, that is an adventure for the senses, The participants explore the fields of art, sculpture, and installations, and create environmental art installations for different senses using various techniques. This course is a multisensory exploration of art, space, environment, and artistic expression.
The pupils practice innovative thinking and creative problem solving, as well as imagination and passionate engagement.
They work both individually and as a team, embracing diversity and championing collaboration.

In Arkki’s Animation theme course, the pupils learn how to plan and realize their own animation movie step by step. They will learn about different animation techniques such as traditional animation by drawing, wax animation and stop motion and get to test several different techniques.
The pupils will get first hand experience in all the different phases of completing an animation movie, such as writing the manuscript, creating the scenery and characters, filming and editing the movie.
The course focuses on a dynamic, hands-on approach to movie making because we believe there’s no better way to learn than doing it hands-on!
At the final day of the course the completed animations are always so fun to watch! Within the process the pupils will practise planning, collaboration, persistence as well as creative thinking.
